BESSEMER, Alabama -- A 33-year-old Birmingham man was charged today with felony assault after Bessemer police said he beat and kicked a woman and hit her husband Friday at the Academy Drive Wal-Mart.

Sgt. Perry Hurst did not release the suspect's name because he has not been served with the warrant.

Hurst gave this account:

About midnight Friday, the suspect -- who was carrying a baby -- came into the store "agitated about something," Hurst said.

"He said he was going to hit anybody who got in his way," Hurst said.

The suspect handed the baby to someone before hitting a woman and then kicking her in the head when she was down. The husband tried to stop the suspect.
