NEW BROCKTON, Ala. --
The tumultuous tenure of New Brockton Mayor Lenwood Herron will officially end in early November after he chose not to qualify for the town’s August elections.
Herron, who in March was convicted of a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge related to operations of the town’s animal shelter, faced a litany of financial issues during the past four years.
Last July, the Internal Revenue Service levied a town account since the town owed more than $44,000 in unpaid payroll taxes. The failure to pay taxes also cost the town a contract with the Southeast Alabama Regional Council on Aging to provide the New Brockton Senior Citizens Center with meals and other services.
